Hot tubs are great until they are not. Once the heater fails, the shell cracks or the cover rots, an old spa turns into one of the hardest things on your property to get rid of. They weigh hundreds of pounds empty, rarely fit through a side gate, and no curbside trash service will take one. Here is what Treasure Valley homeowners should know about getting rid of an old hot tub.
Option 1: Sell or Give It Away
If the tub still works, someone may want it. Local marketplace listings and community groups in Boise, Nampa and Meridian often have people looking for a cheap spa. Be honest about the condition, and make it clear the buyer is responsible for moving it. Keep in mind that moving a hot tub takes several strong people, a trailer and usually a dolly or skates, and many free-hot-tub listings sit for weeks without a taker.
Option 2: Tear It Down Yourself
Some homeowners cut up their own tub with a reciprocating saw and haul the pieces to the landfill. It can be done, but it is a big project. Hot tubs are built from an acrylic or plastic shell, a wood or synthetic frame, spray foam insulation, plumbing, pumps and a heater. Cutting through all of that is messy, loud and slow, and you will need a trailer and several trips. You also need to know what your county transfer station or landfill accepts and how they charge. If you go this route, wear eye and hearing protection, gloves and long sleeves.
Option 3: Hire a Hot Tub Removal Service
For most people, hiring a crew is the simplest way to go. With Evergreen Junk Solutions, hot tub removal starts at $350. Our crew drains the tub, cuts it into sections if it will not fit through your gate, loads everything into our open-top dump trailer, and cleans up the patio or deck before we leave.
What You Need to Do Before Pickup
There is only one thing we need from you: disconnect power and water at the main source before our crew arrives.
- Power: turn off and disconnect power to the tub at the breaker or the dedicated disconnect box. If the tub is hard-wired and the wiring needs to be disconnected or capped, have a licensed electrician do that part before your appointment. Our crew does not disconnect electrical lines.
- Water: if the tub has a water line plumbed to it, shut it off and disconnect it at the main source.
You do not need to drain the tub. We take care of draining on site. It also helps if you clear a path from the tub to the driveway, move patio furniture out of the way, and let us know about gates, steps or tight corners.
How a Professional Removal Works
Here is what a typical Evergreen hot tub removal looks like:
- Free estimate. Text photos of the tub and the path out to the street to (208) 297-3326. Include the gate width if it is narrow.
- Scheduling. We are open 7 days a week, 8am to 5pm, so we can usually find a time that works.
- Drain and prep. Our crew drains the tub and protects the surrounding area.
- Cut-up if needed. If the tub will not fit through your gate or side yard whole, we cut it into manageable sections.
- Haul away. Everything is loaded into our trailer and taken for recycling or proper disposal.
- Cleanup. We sweep and clear the deck, patio or pad.
What Affects the Price
Hot tub removal starts at $350. The final price depends on:
- Size. A small two-seat spa is easier than a large eight-person tub.
- Access. A tub on a ground-level patio near the driveway is quicker than one on an elevated deck or in a fenced backyard with a narrow gate.
- Surround and extras. Built-in steps, wooden surrounds, gazebos or old decking around the tub add work. We can remove those in the same visit as part of our light demolition service.
We confirm the final price before we start.
What About the Deck or Pad?
Removing a tub often reveals a weathered deck, a stained concrete pad or a structure that no longer makes sense. Many Treasure Valley homeowners use the opportunity to reclaim their yard. We can tear out old decking, steps, privacy screens and small structures, and haul away yard debris at the same time. If you are planning something new, like a garden bed or a patio set, our light landscaping service can help get the space ready.
Can Hot Tubs Be Recycled?
Parts of them, yes. Metal components like pumps, motors and some frames can often be recycled. Shells and foam usually cannot. We separate what we can and dispose of the rest properly.
